Product Information

01Description

A small-pattern Holbein star register, Anatolia 15th–17th c., restated in 1200 Reeds

Western Europeans first met Anatolian star carpets in the paintings of Hans Holbein the Younger — the small-pattern carpets in his portraits gave the type its name. The 15th- to 17th-century weavers of central Anatolia worked these as repeating small star-and-cross figures on warm madder grounds, framed by Kufic-derived borders descended from medieval Islamic script ornament. The carpets travelled west on Mediterranean trade routes and ended up under the feet of Venetian doges and Flemish merchants before they ever entered a European inventory under their own name.

This 1200 Reeds machine-woven piece quotes that tradition. Warm madder-red ground, ivory and gold stars in tight repetition, a single Kufic-derived border. It is a design-language reference — not an Anatolian carpet, not 17th c., not hand-knotted. What carries through is the visual register: warm Mediterranean palette, sociable repeating geometry, single-frame border restraint.

How it feels in a room

Sociable. Where the Caucasian star register reads as architecture, the Anatolian Holbein register reads as conviviality — the warmth of the madder ground softens the geometry into something that belongs in great rooms, open dining areas, and any space where people gather around food and conversation. Reads best under warm incandescent light: the gold stars catch the bulb temperature and the field deepens toward dried-rose. Under cool LED the warmth flattens; this is a warm-light rug.

Construction
1200 Reeds machine-woven polypropylene
Density (شانه shaneh / تراکم tarakom)
1200 reed-count, dense small-pattern repetition
Field
Warm madder red, ivory and gold star-cross figures in tight repeat
Border
Single Kufic-derived border, Mediterranean register
Heritage register
Small-pattern Holbein star (central Anatolia, 15th–17th c.; documented in European painting before European inventory)
Care
Not a machine-washable rug. Vacuum weekly under everyday traffic; the repeating small-pattern field forgives ordinary household wear. Blot spills promptly with a clean dry cloth. Professional clean every 18–24 months for dining-area rugs.

Available sizes

3×6, 4×6, 5×7.5, 5×8, 8×10, 8×11, 10×13. See variant selector for current pricing and stock.

Designer styling

Pairs with warm woods (oak, walnut, cherry), terracotta tile, hand-thrown ceramics, copper or aged-brass fixtures, and saturated upholstery in cognac, mustard, or muted green. Anchors a round dining table beautifully because the repeating field has no central focal point that the table would obscure. Works under a long farmhouse table for the same reason. Avoid pairing with high-chrome modern furniture — the warm Mediterranean palette wants warm materials around it.

Best for / Skip if

Best for: open dining rooms, great rooms, gathering spaces, warm-incandescent-lit interiors, owners who entertain and want a rug that reads sociable rather than formal.
Skip if: your interior leans cool/modernist (the warm palette will not behave), you want a single dominant medallion, or you need a quiet study rug. This is a hospitality-register pattern, not a focal-point one.

About 1200 Reeds construction: شانه (shaneh) refers to reed-count density — the warp threads per unit width that determine surface tessellation. تراکم (tarakom) refers to knot/weft density. See our complete guide to reed-count density.

Origin & Heritage

Modern Persian rugs translate the visual vocabulary of classical Persian weaving — medallions, herati fields, layered borders — into palettes and scale that read as contemporary. The pattern lineage is intact; the colour story is updated for rooms built around oak, linen, brass, and natural light. The result reads as authentic Persian without being period-specific.

How It Feels Underfoot

This piece is built for living, not display. The high-density synthetic pile holds pattern definition cleanly underfoot — medallions and borders read sharp at floor level — and recovers from foot traffic, furniture impressions, and the small accidents of family life. The hand is soft and resilient; the cleaning brief is honest spot-and-vacuum rather than the slow ritual of a hand-knotted wool piece.

Designer Styling Notes

Modern Persian palettes pair beautifully with cerused oak, walnut, antiqued brass, ivory linen, cream bouclé, and matte black metalwork. They sit equally well in a contemporary loft as in a transitional living room — the through-line is restraint in the surrounding palette, letting the rug carry the pattern story while the furniture stays quiet.

Our Curated Selection

Stylish Rugs is a Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue — open daily, ten to seven — and the catalogue here is a curated slice of what we carry. We serve the Iranian and Afghan communities of Sacramento and Northern California in person and online, and we source and commission collector pieces on request. If you are looking for a specific size, palette, or hand-knotted commission you do not see listed, call the showroom or message us on WhatsApp and we will let you know what is available now and what we can bring in.

02Materials & Craftsmanship

This piece sits in the easy-care performance family — high-density polypropylene or polyester pile on a cotton foundation, precision machine-woven for sharp pattern definition with hand-finished edges. The construction is purpose-built for family-friendly living: stain-resistant, fade-resistant, low-maintenance, and forgiving of regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.

Patterns are inspired by Persian, Kashan, Tabriz, and Turkmen design vocabularies — reinterpreted in a soft synthetic blend that performs in high-traffic rooms without the maintenance commitment of a hand-knotted wool piece.
