Stylish Rugs Collection

Black Rugs

Most of the black in this collection is floor seating, not floor covering. Black and charcoal are traditional grounds for Afghan toshak covers and Turkmen designs — the deep field is what makes the gold and the tribal gül motifs read at floor level, where the piece is seen from above rather than across a room. Alongside them sit a small number of black-ground Turkish area rugs.

What is in this collection

  • Black and gold Afghan toshak covers — traditional and new-design sets, from $50. These are covers; the foam and cushion filling is separate. See the full range in Afghan Toshak & Cushions.
  • Black Turkmen-design covers — the elephant-foot gül motif on a dark ground.
  • Black and gold floral Turkish area rugs — the small number of true area rugs here, from about $110.

How to work with black

Black is a frame, not a background. It is doing its job when something sits on it or beside it — gold in the weave, a cream cushion, a light floor. On a dark floor against a dark wall it stops reading as a pattern at all.

For floor seating, black is the practical choice. A toshak lives at ground level, takes bare feet and cups of tea, and is folded and moved. A dark ground carries that far better than cream, which is why the tradition settled on it.

Give a black area rug light around it. A black-ground rug in a room with pale walls and a light sofa looks deliberate and expensive. The same rug in an already-dark room reads as a hole in the floor.

Black shows lint, not dirt. The reverse of cream: it hides soil and marks well, but pale pet hair, thread and dust sit visibly on the surface. Regular vacuuming is what keeps it sharp.

Answering your questions about black rugs

Is this a rug or a cover?

Read each listing carefully — this collection holds both. The toshak items are covers for floor mattresses and cushions; they arrive as the cover only, and the foam filling is separate. The items described as Turkish rugs are ordinary area rugs.

What is a toshak?

A toshak is the Afghan floor mattress used for seating around the edge of a room, usually with bolster cushions behind it. A full set makes a low, continuous seating arrangement — the Afghan equivalent of the Arabic majlis.

Does a black rug make a room feel smaller?

It settles and encloses a room, which reads as cosy in a large space and cramped in a small one. If the room is under about 12 by 12 feet, a charcoal grey gives you most of the same effect with more air.

How do I clean it?

Vacuum regularly without a beater bar — that is most of the work on a dark pile. Blot spills with cold water and a drop of mild soap. For a full clean, hose it down outdoors and dry it flat, or take it to a carpet-wash service.

Are these hand-knotted?

No — machine-woven in Türkiye with fringes and edges finished by hand. Hand-knotted Afghan carpets are shown at our Sacramento showroom by appointment and are not listed online.

Can I see these in person?

Yes — most of the in-stock catalog is at our Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue, and toshak sets in particular are worth seeing laid out. WhatsApp (916) 890-4077 to check a design is on the floor before you drive over.

Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Home

A fine rug should feel beautiful, balanced, and practical for the way you live. Use this quick guide to choose the right size, color, material, and style.

Choose the Right Size

For living rooms, 8×10 or 9×12 usually frames the seating area. For dining rooms, choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table.

Match Your Color Story

Burgundy and gold create a warm traditional look. Navy and cream feel elegant and modern. Ivory, beige, and soft tones help brighten smaller rooms.

Understand Rug Quality

Machine-made rugs offer consistent patterns, durability, and easier maintenance. Higher density and detailed weaving create sharper designs.

Shop by size

Not sure what fits? In a living room the rug should reach 18–24 inches past each side of the sofa. In a dining room, allow 24 inches beyond every chair so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.

Practical buying notes

What to know before buying a machine-made rug

Construction

The online catalog is power-loomed in Türkiye with hand-attached fringes and hand-finished edges. Each product page lists the exact construction, density, pile height and material.

Material & feel

A polypropylene pile on a cotton warp and weft — soft underfoot, colourfast, and far more forgiving of traffic and spills than wool.

Cleaning

Colourfast and water-safe, so a rug can be washed at home by hand or with a carpet-cleaning machine. Never in a washing machine or dryer. Day to day, vacuum on low with the beater bar off.

Best rooms

Living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, family rooms and majlis seating — anywhere you want a traditional look that survives daily use.

Hand-knotted

Genuine hand-knotted Afghan carpets are shown at the Sacramento showroom by appointment. They are not part of this online catalog.

Common questions

How much is shipping, and how long does it take?

Shipping is free on orders over $110 across the USA and Canada, and a flat $20 below that. Orders leave within one business day and arrive in 3–5 business days in the U.S. Sacramento-area online orders get free local delivery in 1–2 days.

What is your return policy?

30-day returns on online orders. Items must be unused, in original condition and in original packaging. The customer pays return shipping; if a rug arrives damaged or faulty, we pay. Approved refunds are processed within 3–7 business days.

Are these rugs machine-made or hand-knotted?

The online catalog is power-loomed (machine-woven) in Türkiye, with hand-attached fringes and hand-finished edges. Every product page lists the exact construction, density, pile height and material. Hand-knotted Afghan pieces are shown at the Sacramento showroom by appointment and are not listed online.

Can a rug be cut or bound to a different size?

We sell from stock rather than weaving to order, and the largest size we carry is 10×13. What we do in house is cutting, binding, overlocking and fringe work on a rug we already stock, so an existing piece can be trimmed to fit an alcove or a stair run. Ask us and we will tell you what is on the floor.

Can I see the rugs in person before buying?

Yes. The showroom is at 3423 Watt Avenue, Sacramento, open daily 10:00 AM – 7:30 PM. We speak English, Turkish, Farsi, Dari, Pashto and Urdu, and the team can help with size and colour choices.
