Rug Size Guide
Most rugs that go back to us are returned for one reason: they were too small. Sizing right the first time saves the rug, the shipping, and the dignity of the room. Here is what we tell every customer who calls us.
The two-finger rule
Place an open hand on the floor at the edge of where you imagine the rug ending. If your fingertips reach the front foot of the sofa, the rug is too small. Two fingers (roughly 18 inches) of rug should extend beyond the sofa on every side that faces the room.
That's the entire rule. Everything below is just the rule applied to specific rooms.
Living room
Living rooms hold rugs the way a frame holds a painting. The rug should run under the front feet of every seating piece (sofa, chairs, ottoman) at minimum — and ideally under the full furniture footprint when space allows.
| Room size | Recommended rug | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / small (10×12 ft) | 5×8 or 6×9 | Front feet of sofa on rug; chairs may sit on bare floor |
| Standard (12×15 ft) | 8×10 | Full sofa + chair front feet on rug |
| Large (14×18 ft) | 9×12 | All seating fully on rug — preferred for formal living |
| Oversized / great room (18×22 ft+) | 10×13 to 12×18 | Anchor a single seating area; consider two rugs for split zones |
Dining room
The rule is geometry: the rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on every side. Chair back legs should never leave the rug when a guest stands up.
| Table | Seats | Recommended rug |
|---|---|---|
| Round 48" or square 4 ft | 4 | 8×8 round or 8×10 |
| Rectangular 60-72" | 6 | 8×10 |
| Rectangular 84" | 6-8 | 9×12 |
| Rectangular 96"+ | 8-10 | 10×13 or 10×14 |
Bedroom
For the king or queen bed, the rug should extend 18 to 24 inches on the sides and at the foot of the bed. The top third of the rug typically goes under the bed itself.
| Bed | Recommended rug |
|---|---|
| King (76×80 in) | 9×12 (under entire bed) or 8×10 (under lower two-thirds) |
| Queen (60×80 in) | 8×10 or 9×12 |
| Full / Double | 6×9 or 8×10 |
| Twin | 5×7 (placed alongside) or two runners (each side) |
Hallways & runners
Runners should leave 4 to 6 inches of floor on each long side of the rug — wood floor framing the runner reads cleaner than a runner that fills the entire hallway. Length is the variable.
| Hallway length | Runner length |
|---|---|
| 6-8 ft | 2.5×8 or 2.5×7 |
| 10-12 ft | 2.5×10 or 2.5×12 |
| 14-16 ft | 2.5×14 to 2.5×16 |
| 18 ft+ | Custom-cut runner (see commission below) |
Entryway
For a foyer rug, the piece should sit fully inside the entry area without crossing into the adjoining room. 3×5 or 4×6 covers most residential entries; round rugs read well under chandeliers in formal foyers.
If your room is in between sizes
Go up, not down. A slightly oversized rug always reads more confident than one that floats undersized in a room. We have not once heard a customer say "I wish my rug were smaller."
Custom sizes
Most designs in our collection can be commissioned in non-standard sizes. Typical lead time is four to six weeks. See custom commission for the full scope or talk to our concierge about a specific size question.
Still not sure?
Send a photo of the room from the doorway, the room dimensions, and the furniture footprint to info@stylishrugs.us. A specialist will return a sizing recommendation the same business day — no obligation. For Sacramento and Bay Area customers, the fastest path is to walk the showroom and try sizes against your photos in person.
