Unique Rug Trove

A small, rotating group of bamboo-viscose rugs — the ones with a sheen. Bamboo viscose, usually sold as “bamboo silk,” is a regenerated cellulose fibre. It takes dye deeply and reflects light along the length of the pile, so the colour appears to shift as you walk past it. That optical effect is what people are actually buying when they reach for a silk-look rug, and it is the reason these pieces do not sit with the rest of the catalog.

Be clear about two things

This is not silk. “Bamboo silk” is a trade name for viscose, not a silk content claim. It has the lustre; it does not have silk’s strength or its price. We would rather say that here than let the name do the work.

These are antique-style, not antiques. The Mamluk design, the red-and-white and black-and-white pieces and the vintage-inspired statement rug reproduce old design languages and finishes. They are new rugs. We do not deal in genuine antiques, and if that is what you are looking for we will tell you so rather than sell you one of these.

Living with a bamboo-viscose rug

It is a low-traffic fibre. Plan accordingly. Viscose is beautiful and it is delicate — weaker wet than dry, and it marks more easily than polypropylene. A formal sitting room, a bedroom, under a coffee table: yes. An entry hall, a dining room or the dog’s route to the door: choose from our 1200-reed area rugs instead, and we would rather tell you that before you buy.

Blot, do not rub, and use as little water as possible. Lift spills with a dry white cloth first, then the barest damp touch. Viscose does not want the hose treatment our polypropylene rugs are happy with.

Pile direction is part of the design. The shimmer changes with the angle you view it from. Turn the rug 180° before you settle on its position — most people prefer one direction strongly once they see both.

Answering your questions

Is bamboo silk real silk?

No. It is bamboo-derived viscose — a regenerated cellulose fibre with a silk-like lustre. Real silk rugs are not part of this group.

Are these genuine antiques?

No. They are new rugs in antique and vintage styles. We do not sell genuine antique carpets.

Can I use one in a busy room?

We would not. Viscose is a low-traffic fibre. For a busy household the honest recommendation is a 1200-reed polypropylene rug, which will take the abuse and clean up afterwards.

How do I clean it?

Blot immediately with a dry white cloth, then a barely damp one. Vacuum gently, without a beater bar. For anything serious, take it to a rug-cleaning professional and tell them it is viscose — the treatment is different from wool or synthetic.

Why are there only a few?
