A majlis is not a sofa on the floor. It is a different way of arranging a room. Seating runs along the walls instead of facing a television, everyone sits at the same level, and the middle of the room stays open for a tray, a table, or children. It is the arrangement most Afghan, Arab, Persian and Central-Asian households grew up with — also called an Arabic couch, an arab sofa, a jalsa, or a diwan.

What a set is, and what it costs

Every set here is four pieces: one floor seat cushion, two backrest pillows and an armrest pillow. You choose how much of it you want:

• Cover only — from $85. The fabric alone. Buy this if you already own foam, or you are re-covering a set you have had for years.
• One complete set with foam — $220. Cover and foam together, ready to sit on.
• Four complete sets with foam — $800. Enough to run seating along the walls of a normal living room. This is the option most families actually want, and it works out at $200 a set.

That is the honest number, at one price, every day. We do not mark a set up and then show you a permanent discount off it.

Why we can price it that way

We import the foam ourselves, by the container, direct from the manufacturer — and we cut and fill in Sacramento rather than buying finished sets from a middleman. A complete four-piece majlis with foam costs less here than a cover alone does in a lot of places, and that is the reason why, not a promotion.

Specifications

• Foam: polyurethane, 28 density, 190 × 75 × 10 cm — about 75″ long, 30″ deep and 4″ thick. Four inches is the thickness that stays comfortable for a long evening; thinner pads bottom out against the floor.
• Covers: double-sided, first-class polyester, in traditional and modern patterns.
• Care: the covers come off and go in the wash at 30°C, then air dry — which is the whole point of a removable cover. The foam core itself is spot-cleaned.
• Storage: folds flat. A set that is out every evening in winter can go in a closet for the summer.
• Shipping: foam arrives compressed and expands fully within about a day once laid flat.

Before you order — two honest things

A floor sofa is not freestanding. The backrest needs a wall, or something solid, behind it. Set out in the middle of a room with nothing behind it, it will lean back. Plan the wall first, then count the sets.

Measure the wall, not the room. Each seat is about 75 inches long. A 12-foot wall takes two sets with a little room at each end; a standard living room usually needs three or four to run two walls, which is why the four-set option exists.

Answering your questions about majlis seating

How many sets do I need?

Measure the walls you want to seat and divide by roughly 6.5 feet per set. Two sets make a corner, three make an L, four line two full walls. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the room on WhatsApp (916) 890-4077 and we will tell you what fits.

Is it comfortable to sit on for a whole evening?

With the 4-inch foam, yes — that is what the thickness is for. The backrest pillows do the rest of the work, which is why the wall behind matters. Cover-only, laid over thin padding, is not the same thing and is not meant to be.

Can I wash the covers?

Yes — they unzip, wash at 30°C and air dry. That is the practical advantage of this kind of seating over an upholstered sofa: the part that gets used is the part you can take off and clean.

Can I buy covers now and foam later?

Yes, and plenty of customers do. The cover-only option exists for exactly that, and for re-covering a set you already own rather than replacing it.

Does it work as a guest bed?

Yes. At 75 inches long and 4 inches thick it sleeps an adult comfortably for a night or two — which is how these have always been used. That is also why they fold.

What is the difference between a majlis and an Afghan toshak?

Mostly the shape of the set and the pattern tradition. A majlis set is four pieces built around a backrest and an armrest; an Afghan toshak is a longer, simpler floor mattress with two matching cushions. Many households mix the two.

Can I see and sit on one before buying?
