Every few weeks someone walks into our Sacramento showroom with a phone photo of a green majlis or an olive toshak set and the same question: which rug goes under this? After years of laying rugs down next to green cushions, the answer comes down to two families — cream and red — and a few simple rules about how much of each.
Why cream and red work with green
- Red answers green. They are complementary colours: placed side by side, each makes the other look more saturated. A red-ground medallion rug under a green majlis is the oldest pairing in floor-seating rooms — it is the same red-and-green you see woven into kilim cushion covers.
- Cream gives green room. A cream or ivory ground puts a light band between the green seating and the floor, so the room reads brighter and larger. It is the better choice for small rooms, low light, or dark floors.
- Green on green flattens the room. A green rug under green cushions makes everything one block of colour — the seating stops looking like a deliberate choice.
Pairing 1 — green majlis + cream medallion rug
A green majlis already carries a lot of pattern on its seats and backrests. A cream-ground medallion rug calms that down: the cream field rests the eye, and the medallion's red, navy or gold accents pick up the small motifs in the cushion weave. This is the pairing for a family room you want to feel open and bright.
Pairing 2 — olive toshak + red medallion rug
Olive is a warm green with brown and gold in it. It wants warmth back, and a red medallion rug gives exactly that — the room turns rich and traditional, the way a guest room set for tea should feel. If you love red but the room is small, choose a red-and-cream rug: the red field anchors the seating while the cream medallion keeps the floor from feeling heavy.

The 2026 look
This year's floor-seating rooms are warmer than the grey-on-grey of a few years ago: deep greens, olive and sage on the cushions, with a warm rug underneath and brass or wood around it. Two combinations we keep setting up in the showroom:
- Bright and calm: green majlis + cream medallion rug + white walls + brass tray. Works in apartments and small living rooms.
- Rich and traditional: olive toshak + red medallion rug + low wooden table + warm lamp light. The guest-room look, perfect for long evenings and tea.
What size rug goes under floor seating?
- One wall of seating (2 sets side by side): a 6.5×10 ft (200×300 cm) rug, so the front edge of the cushions sits on the rug.
- L-shape or seating on two walls: 8.2×11.5 ft (250×350 cm).
- U-shape or a large majlis room: 10×13 ft (300×400 cm), our largest size.
Floor cushions sit low, so the whole seating area — including where guests put their feet and the tray in the middle — should be on the rug. When in doubt, go one size up.
Mistakes to avoid
- Green rug + green seating. Everything melts into one colour.
- Cold grey rug + olive toshak. Olive needs warmth; grey makes it look dull.
- A rug too small for the seating. Cushions half on, half off the rug look temporary.
Frequently asked questions
What colour rug goes with a green majlis?
Cream or red. A cream-ground medallion rug keeps the room bright; a red-ground rug makes the green look richer. Avoid green rugs.
Does a red rug go with an olive toshak?
Yes — it is one of the best pairings. Olive is a warm green, and a red medallion rug brings out its gold tones. In small rooms choose a red-and-cream rug.
Do I need a rug pad under floor seating?
Not with our rugs. Their weight and woven cotton backing keep them flat and in place.
Can I see the rugs next to the seating before buying?
Yes. Our Sacramento showroom on Watt Avenue has both the floor seating and the rugs, so you can lay them side by side. We also ship free across the USA and Canada on orders over $110.
