01Description

The Tekke göl, and why it’s so disciplined

The Tekke confederation — historically the dominant Turkmen tribe in the territory between the Karakum desert and the Iranian border — built its weaving identity around a single repeating motif: an octagonal medallion subdivided into quadrants, with smaller diamond figures filling each. The Tekke göl. It is the most regimented tribal pattern in the Persian/Central-Asian world: the göls line up in strict columns and rows, the spacing is exact, the secondary motifs are minor. The aesthetic was deliberate — Tekke weaving traded its emotional content for visible structural discipline, and connoisseurs in St. Petersburg and London in the late 19th century paid premium prices precisely because of that restraint. This piece is our 1200 Reeds quotation of that grammar.

How it lives in a real room

This rug has a strong directional axis (the göl rows) and a strong gravitational center (the mahogany-dark field). It anchors a room rather than decorating it. Under any color temperature — warm, cool, mixed — the field stays dark enough that the göls retain their crispness; lighting doesn’t change the read. Underfoot, the dense 1200-reed pile feels firm rather than plush — again, scholarly rather than indulgent.

Construction
1200 Reeds — شانه shaneh 1200, تراکم tarakom >3,000,000 knots/m²
Pile
66% Polypropylene / 34% Polyester on premium cotton warp
Tradition quoted
Tekke Turkmen göl field (Central Asia, 19th c.) — design-language reference
Composition
Regimented Tekke göl rows on mahogany-dark ground, multi-band Turkmen border
Daily care
Vacuum without the beater bar — the dense weave prefers straight suction. Spot-blot any spill with cold water and a clean white cloth, never rub. Professional clean every 18–24 months. This is not a machine-washable rug.

Available sizes

Multiple sizes available from accent through full-room. See variant selector for current pricing.

Designer styling

Built for studies, libraries, bachelor-flat living rooms, masculine-coded reading corners, and any space where the rug is meant to settle the room rather than enliven it. Pairs with dark walnut, mahogany, oxblood leather, brass and burnished bronze hardware, oil portraits, antique brassware. Avoid bright contemporary modernist palettes — the rug will read foreign.

Best for / skip if

Best for: dedicated study or library spaces; collected-traditional rooms with antique wood and leather; collectors of ethnographic textiles; renters who want a rug with intellectual weight.

Skip if: the room is light, bright, or modernist — the Tekke field will read heavy. Try the cohort’s cream or silver Persian-design siblings for lighter registers.

See it in our Sacramento showroom

Tribal rugs photograph stiff and live differently. Our Watt Avenue showroom keeps the Turkmen and Baluch registers available so you can read the discipline of the Tekke göl against the looser tribal cousins. Visit the showroom or browse Persian-design rugs.

Reed count and density. “1200 Reeds” (شانه ۱۲۰۰, shaneh 1200) describes warp density across the rug’s width; “tarakom” (تراکم) describes knot density. Our 1200 Reeds line exceeds 3,000,000 knots/m² — well above commodity machine-woven rugs and approaching mid-grade hand-knotted territory in fineness, though still a machine-woven design-language quotation of the traditions it references. Full reed-count guide.

Origin & Heritage

Afghan weaving carries its own visual signature — deeper red and rust grounds, repeating gul medallions associated with the Turkmen tradition, and bold geometric borders. Where Persian work tends toward floral curves, Afghan rugs lean into geometry and saturated colour. This piece sits in that tradition with a contemporary build suited to high-traffic interiors.

How It Feels Underfoot

This piece is built for living, not display. The high-density synthetic pile holds pattern definition cleanly underfoot — medallions and borders read sharp at floor level — and recovers from foot traffic, furniture impressions, and the small accidents of family life. The hand is soft and resilient; the cleaning brief is honest spot-and-vacuum rather than the slow ritual of a hand-knotted wool piece.

Designer Styling Notes

Afghan reds and rusts pair beautifully with walnut, leather, brass, and warm-toned wools — they ground a room with intent. They also work as a deliberate counterpoint in cooler interiors: an Afghan rug under a pale linen sofa adds warmth and pattern without crowding the rest of the palette. In dining rooms, choose a size that lets chairs sit fully on the rug.

Our Curated Selection

Stylish Rugs is a Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue — open daily, ten to seven — and the catalogue here is a curated slice of what we carry. We serve the Iranian and Afghan communities of Sacramento and Northern California in person and online, and we source and commission collector pieces on request. If you are looking for a specific size, palette, or hand-knotted commission you do not see listed, call the showroom or message us on WhatsApp and we will let you know what is available now and what we can bring in.

02Materials & Craftsmanship

This piece sits in the easy-care performance family — high-density polypropylene or polyester pile on a cotton foundation, precision machine-woven for sharp pattern definition with hand-finished edges. The construction is purpose-built for family-friendly living: stain-resistant, fade-resistant, low-maintenance, and forgiving of regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.

Patterns are inspired by Persian, Kashan, Tabriz, and Turkmen design vocabularies — reinterpreted in a soft synthetic blend that performs in high-traffic rooms without the maintenance commitment of a hand-knotted wool piece.

03Size Guide

5×7.5 ft (150×230 cm, 3.5 m²) — entry rooms, small bedrooms, and sitting areas.

8.2×11.5 ft (250×350 cm, 9 m²) — large living rooms and formal dining rooms (all furniture sitting on the rug).

10×13 ft (300×400 cm, 12 m²) — open floor plans and great rooms.

Styling tip: a rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond the sofa on each side for a balanced look.

04Care Instructions

  • Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth (don't rub)
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 6 months for even wear
