Rug Overlocking & Serging Sacramento — Edge Binding for Cut-Down & Custom-Size Rugs
Machine overlocking and hand serging for cut-down rugs, broadloom-to-area-rug conversions, and custom-size finishing at our Sacramento workshop. Matched-color yarn, stabilizing border row where needed, fast turnaround — most pieces finished in 3–7 days.
If your rug has been cut down, bought as a remnant, or had its original binding fail, the cut edge needs to be sealed before the body of the rug starts unraveling. We offer two finishing techniques: machine overlock (fast, durable, machine-stitched yarn around the edge) and hand serging (slower, traditional, looks closer to original Persian-rug binding). We will recommend the right one for your piece.
When you need overlocking or serging
Overlocking vs serging — which to choose
Both techniques seal the cut edge of a rug. They look and behave differently and they are priced differently. Pick based on the rug type and how visible the binding will be:
Process
- Drop-off or pickupBring the rug in (free) or schedule pickup across the Sacramento region. For broadloom remnants we can also receive direct shipment from your installer.
- Edge prep & color matchIf the rug was cut, we trim the cut edge to a clean line before binding. Color is matched against the existing pile or selvedge — we hold a large yarn library so most matches come from stock.
- Overlock or sergeMachine overlock is run on our heavy-duty edge machine. Hand serging is done on the floor by a finisher working in matched yarn around a stabilizing edge cord.
- Inspection & pickupFinal inspection for tension, color match, and corner finish. Pickup at the showroom or local delivery within 25 miles.

Overlocking & Serging FAQ
What is the difference between overlocking and serging?
Overlocking is machine-stitched yarn wrapping the edge — fast, durable, neat. Serging is hand-wrapped yarn around the edge cord, looks closer to original Persian-rug binding, and is appropriate for hand-knotted pieces where appearance matters. Both seal the cut edge against unraveling.
How much does it cost to overlock a rug?
Machine overlock typically $4–$8 per linear foot. Hand serging $8–$18 per linear foot. A standard 8×10 rug (36 feet of perimeter) is therefore around $145–$290 to overlock or $290–$650 to hand-serge. We quote in writing after seeing the rug.
Can you turn a remnant of broadloom carpet into an area rug?
Yes — broadloom-to-area-rug conversion is a routine job. We trim the remnant to your specified dimensions, then overlock all four edges in your color choice. Common after wall-to-wall installations leave usable remnants. Lead time typically 5–7 days.
Can you overlock a hand-knotted Persian rug?
Yes, but for hand-knotted pieces we usually recommend hand serging instead. Hand serging matches the original Persian-rug binding technique and looks much closer to the original selvedge work. Machine overlock works but looks like a retail finish, which is fine for utility pieces and wrong for fine workshop pieces.
How long does overlocking take?
Most overlocking jobs are finished within 5–7 days. Hand serging typically 2–3 weeks because the work is done by hand around the entire perimeter. Custom color-match dye work adds about a week.
Can I have a stair runner cut and overlocked from broadloom?
Yes. We cut the runner to specified length and overlock both long sides in matched yarn. For staircases with custom step counts we recommend bringing precise measurements to the showroom — stair runners need exact length per step + landings.
Will the overlocked edge wear out faster than original selvedge?
No, with proper installation and a quality rug pad, machine-overlocked edges last as long as the rug itself in normal floor use. Hand-serged edges can outlast the binding on the rug. Both finishes hold for decades when the rug is laid flat with proper underlayment.
Do you do edge work on rugs you didn't sell?
Yes. Most overlock and serge work is on customer-owned pieces — cut-downs from estate moves, remnants, custom orders cut from broadloom, or rugs whose original binding has failed. We don't require proof of purchase or charge differently based on origin.
