Kashan Manchester — when Kashan went global

Between roughly 1900 and 1935, the senior Kashan workshops faced a quiet crisis: the local Iranian wool clip wasn’t fine enough to support their increasingly delicate floral grammar. The solution came through commerce — British merino wool, imported via the Manchester wool exchange, was finer, more uniformly spun, and crucially took the deep madder reds Kashan dyers preferred. The resulting rugs were branded “Kashan Manchester” by Western dealers, and they remain the most refined chapter of Kashan weaving in the 20th century. This piece is our 1200 Reeds reading of that grammar — fine drawing, dense floral repeat, no central medallion to interrupt the field.

What “finer-drawn” means in practice

The Manchester register relies on small motifs at high density rather than on bold central composition. From standing distance the field reads as a textured red surface; bend down to coffee-table height and the individual floral sprays emerge clearly. This makes it the most viewing-distance-flexible Kashan sibling — it works as a quiet rug at dining height and as a richly-detailed rug at seated height. Holds well under both warm and cool lighting because the field density carries the read regardless of color temperature.

Construction
1200 Reeds — شانه shaneh 1200, تراکم tarakom >3,000,000 knots/m²
Pile
66% Polypropylene / 34% Polyester on premium cotton warp
Tradition quoted
Kashan Manchester (1920s–35 British-export chapter) — design-language reference
Composition
Deep red ground, fine repeating polychrome floral sprays, layered Kashan border
Daily care
Low-maintenance under normal household traffic. Vacuum regularly to lift surface debris. The repeating floral field forgives minor wear and ages gracefully. Professional clean every 18 months for high-traffic rooms. This is not a machine-washable rug.

Designer styling

Refined traditional and transitional-traditional rooms; dining rooms with patterned upholstery; sitting rooms with floral chintz or damask; libraries with leather and gilded prints; bedrooms in classical-revival style. Pairs with rosewood, cherry, walnut, antique gilt, embroidered or printed cushions, English-traditional or French-Provincial furniture.

Best for / skip if

Best for: refined traditional rooms; viewers who appreciate close-distance detail; dining and sitting rooms where furniture sits well into the rug; bedrooms where the rug runs under and beyond the bed.

Skip if: the room is contemporary or minimalist — the floral density will read busy. Try the cohort’s canonical Kashan medallion-and-corner sibling for cleaner formal composition.

See it in our Sacramento showroom

The Manchester field rewards viewing at different distances — something photos rarely capture. Our Watt Avenue showroom is set up to walk you around the rug at standing, seated, and bent distances. Visit the showroom or browse Persian-design rugs.

Reed count and density. “1200 Reeds” (شانه ۱۲۰۰, shaneh 1200) describes warp density across the rug’s width; “tarakom” (تراکم) describes knot density. Our 1200 Reeds line exceeds 3,000,000 knots/m² — well above commodity machine-woven rugs and approaching mid-grade hand-knotted territory in fineness, though still a machine-woven design-language quotation of the traditions it references. Full reed-count guide.

Origin & Heritage

Kashan sits in the Persian heart, and its weaving tradition reaches back to the Safavid era — a city whose looms have produced some of the most recognised medallion compositions in the world. The classic Kashan vocabulary is unmistakable: a central medallion suspended on a richly coloured field, framed by floral spandrels and a deep, layered border. This piece carries that vocabulary forward in a faithful Persian-inspired interpretation.

How It Feels Underfoot

This piece is built for living, not display. The high-density synthetic pile holds pattern definition cleanly underfoot — medallions and borders read sharp at floor level — and recovers from foot traffic, furniture impressions, and the small accidents of family life. The hand is soft and resilient; the cleaning brief is honest spot-and-vacuum rather than the slow ritual of a hand-knotted wool piece.

Designer Styling Notes

Kashan palettes anchor a room with intent. Pair the deeper navy and burgundy fields with antiqued brass, walnut, oak, and ivory linen; cream and ivory grounds carry beautifully against polished nickel, cerused oak, and warm bouclé. For a layered look, set against a leather chesterfield or beneath a carved walnut dining table; for a quieter modern read, a low-profile linen sectional and a single bronze floor lamp.

Our Curated Selection

Stylish Rugs is a Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue — open daily, ten to seven — and the catalogue here is a curated slice of what we carry. We serve the Iranian and Afghan communities of Sacramento and Northern California in person and online, and we source and commission collector pieces on request. If you are looking for a specific size, palette, or hand-knotted commission you do not see listed, call the showroom or message us on WhatsApp and we will let you know what is available now and what we can bring in.

02Materials & Craftsmanship

This piece sits in the easy-care performance family — high-density polypropylene or polyester pile on a cotton foundation, precision machine-woven for sharp pattern definition with hand-finished edges. The construction is purpose-built for family-friendly living: stain-resistant, fade-resistant, low-maintenance, and forgiving of regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.

Patterns are inspired by Persian, Kashan, Tabriz, and Turkmen design vocabularies — reinterpreted in a soft synthetic blend that performs in high-traffic rooms without the maintenance commitment of a hand-knotted wool piece.

03Size Guide

5×7.5 ft (150×230 cm, 3.5 m²) — entry rooms, small bedrooms, and sitting areas.

8.2×11.5 ft (250×350 cm, 9 m²) — large living rooms and formal dining rooms (all furniture sitting on the rug).

10×13 ft (300×400 cm, 12 m²) — open floor plans and great rooms.

Styling tip: a rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond the sofa on each side for a balanced look.

  • Rotate the rug 180° every 6 months for even wear
