Heritage & inspiration

This piece draws from Caucasian Shirvan weaving as practiced in the Eastern Caucasus — modern-day Azerbaijan, with related traditions in Kuba and Daghestan — from the late 18th through the late 19th century. Shirvan weavers worked in a tradition very different from their Anatolian or Persian neighbors: bolder rectilinear geometry, stricter symmetry along the vertical axis, simpler interior fill, the prayer-niche treated as architectural quotation rather than naturalistic curve.

That distinction matters next to the cohort's Light Gray Anatolian mihrab-arch sibling. Same family of directional arch composition, but the Anatolian register is curvilinear and floral; this Caucasian register is rectilinear and architectural. Two different ways of being directional on a 1200 Reeds floor.

Distinct also from the Dark Gray Heriz anchor (medallion-symmetric village geometry), the Kerman court sibling (refined floral, symmetric), and the Mughal sibling (ceremonial declaration). This is the cohort's only directional Dark Gray.

How it feels underfoot

1200 Reeds (1200 شانه) on premium cotton warp; density over 3,000,000 knots/m² (تراکم). Same engineered consistency as the rest of the cohort. The Caucasian register affects the visual language, not the underfoot feel.

Available sizes

Stocked in the canonical cohort run: 3×6, 3×10, 5×7.5, 6.5×10, 8.2×11.5, and 10×13 ft. Caucasian Shirvan arch designs read strongest at 3×6, 5×7.5, and 6.5×10 — the geometric structure is calibrated for smaller-scale weaving (the historical Shirvan tradition rarely produced rugs over 6×9). At 10×13 the field expands beyond what the geometry was built to support; choose a medallion-symmetric DG sibling at large scales.

Designer styling notes

The directional Caucasian register pairs with:

  • Entry / foyer: arch points away from the door; the canonical Shirvan placement when adapted to Western interiors
  • Head-of-bed: 5×7.5 with arch crown at the headboard wall — reads as an architectural device under the bed rather than a generic rectangle
  • Reading nook / alcove: the rug frames the chair; the room reads composed around the rug
  • Wood: walnut, smoked oak, espresso casegoods — dark formal woods that hold against the dark gray ground
  • Upholstery: ivory bouclé, navy linen, oxblood leather — the geometric register tolerates strong solid colors more than fussy patterns
  • Avoid: centered under a coffee table in the middle of a symmetric living room

Best for · skip if

Best for: rooms with a clear axis — entries, reading alcoves, head-of-bed positions, sun-rooms with a primary view, libraries with a single dominant reading chair. The Caucasian arch flatters architecture that already has direction and benefits from explicit geometric punctuation.

Skip if the room is symmetric, the brief is formal court refinement (use the Kerman DG sibling), or the brief is ceremonial declaration (use the Mughal DG sibling). Caucasian Shirvan is the cohort's most idiomatically specific Dark Gray — strong choice in the right room, awkward in the wrong one.

See it in person at our Watt Avenue showroom. Caucasian arch rugs photograph as flatter graphics than they read at floor scale — the geometric structure asserts itself in a way that thumbnails don't capture. We'll orient it directionally so you can see how arch-rugs change a room versus medallion rugs. Free local delivery within Sacramento metro.

Origin & Heritage

Modern Persian rugs translate the visual vocabulary of classical Persian weaving — medallions, herati fields, layered borders — into palettes and scale that read as contemporary. The pattern lineage is intact; the colour story is updated for rooms built around oak, linen, brass, and natural light. The result reads as authentic Persian without being period-specific.

How It Feels Underfoot

This piece is built for living, not display. The high-density synthetic pile holds pattern definition cleanly underfoot — medallions and borders read sharp at floor level — and recovers from foot traffic, furniture impressions, and the small accidents of family life. The hand is soft and resilient; the cleaning brief is honest spot-and-vacuum rather than the slow ritual of a hand-knotted wool piece.

Designer Styling Notes

Modern Persian palettes pair beautifully with cerused oak, walnut, antiqued brass, ivory linen, cream bouclé, and matte black metalwork. They sit equally well in a contemporary loft as in a transitional living room — the through-line is restraint in the surrounding palette, letting the rug carry the pattern story while the furniture stays quiet.

Our Curated Selection

Stylish Rugs is a Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue — open daily, ten to seven — and the catalogue here is a curated slice of what we carry. We serve the Iranian and Afghan communities of Sacramento and Northern California in person and online, and we source and commission collector pieces on request. If you are looking for a specific size, palette, or hand-knotted commission you do not see listed, call the showroom or message us on WhatsApp and we will let you know what is available now and what we can bring in.

02Materials & Craftsmanship

This piece sits in the easy-care performance family — high-density polypropylene or polyester pile on a cotton foundation, precision machine-woven for sharp pattern definition with hand-finished edges. The construction is purpose-built for family-friendly living: stain-resistant, fade-resistant, low-maintenance, and forgiving of regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.

Patterns are inspired by Persian, Kashan, Tabriz, and Turkmen design vocabularies — reinterpreted in a soft synthetic blend that performs in high-traffic rooms without the maintenance commitment of a hand-knotted wool piece.

03Size Guide

5×7.5 ft (150×230 cm, 3.5 m²) — entry rooms, small bedrooms, and sitting areas.

6.5×10 ft (200×300 cm, 6 m²) — medium living rooms and bedrooms with furniture partially on the rug.

8.2×11.5 ft (250×350 cm, 9 m²) — large living rooms and formal dining rooms (all furniture sitting on the rug).

10×13 ft (300×400 cm, 12 m²) — open floor plans and great rooms.

Styling tip: a rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond the sofa on each side for a balanced look.

04Care Instructions
  • Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off to protect the pile
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth (don't rub)
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 6 months for even wear
  • Professional clean every 12–18 months
  • Use a quality rug pad on hardwood for cushion and to extend life
