The Joshagan trellis — three centuries of geometric discipline

While the Esfahan court ateliers were spinning curvilinear arabesques in silk and gold thread, the Joshagan workshops a hundred kilometers northwest were doing the opposite: a strict diamond lattice across the entire field, one small stylized rosette in each diamond, and an ornate multi-tier border to close the composition. The pattern is so consistent across centuries that “Joshagan design” is shorthand for it in the trade. This piece is our 1200 Reeds reading of that lattice.

The ink-navy ground — the deepest in the cohort — lets the lighter rosettes pop without color competition. The ornate border isn’t decoration; it’s structural. It tells the lattice where to stop, the way a heavy frame tells a painting where it ends.

Why “architectural” is the right word

This rug rewards rooms with built furniture: a low rectilinear sofa, a flat-panel media wall, a marble or concrete coffee table, vertical bookshelves. The diamond grid in the field rhymes with rectangles in the room. The geometry holds under any color temperature because there’s no curvy form that softens or melts under cool LED — a curvilinear medallion can read uncertain under fluorescent overhead, where a diamond lattice can’t. Alongside the cohort’s Caucasian Kuba sibling, this is the most reliable Navy performer under office-spec or cool-white lighting.

Underfoot, the same 66/34 polypropylene-polyester pile on cotton warp as the rest of the cohort, with crisply defined diamond boundaries thanks to the 1200-reed warp density carrying the lattice without blur.

Built for transitional and formal-modern rooms: low rectilinear sofas (Florence Knoll, Mies, Charlotte Perriand), Saarinen tulip tables, walnut credenzas with flush hardware, marble coffee tables. Pairs beautifully under mid-century lighting (PH Artichoke, Serge Mouille) and in loft-scale offices. Upholstery in cream, oatmeal, camel, or rust — never compete with the navy.

Best for: transitional living and dining rooms with rectilinear furniture; home offices; mid-century-modern interiors that want a classical-pattern anchor; bedrooms where one strong geometric piece structures the whole room.

Skip if: you want flowing curvilinear arabesques — the lattice is uncompromising. Try the cohort’s Tabriz Hadji Jalili or Lavar Kerman siblings for soft curves instead. Also skip if the room is already crowded with competing diamond patterns (lattice-back chairs, mosaic tile floors) — the rug will fight them.

Reed count and density. “1200 Reeds” (شانه ۱۲۰۰, shaneh 1200) describes warp density across the rug’s width; “tarakom” (تراکم) describes knot density. Our 1200 Reeds line exceeds 3,000,000 knots/m² — well above commodity machine-woven rugs and approaching mid-grade hand-knotted territory in fineness, though still a machine-woven design-language quotation of the traditions it references. This piece sits in the cotton family — cotton face on a cotton foundation, precision machine-woven for sharp pattern definition with hand-finished edges. The cotton hand is softer and lighter than wool underfoot, reads more tonal, and suits bedrooms, sunrooms, and adult-led households where palette quietness matters.

Patterns draw on Persian medallion and field traditions, translated into the cotton register: lighter, more luminous, more breathable than a comparable wool weave. Care is straightforward but not machine-wash — see the Care panel for details on this construction.
