Patchwork is the format for people who never quite settled on one period or one country. Each square is a different traditional pattern, rendered in a single palette family so the rug reads coherent rather than chaotic. It is the rug that lets a room hold antique and modern, English and Turkish, oil paintings and op art, without anything having to match.
Heritage
The patchwork format predates the Western "shabby chic" recycled-vintage patchwork rug by several centuries. Heriz village workshops in northwest Iran wove block-pattern rugs where each square referenced a different regional motif — Tabriz medallion, Caucasian geometric, Bidjar floral, Hamadan diamond. The format was an act of compositional democracy: no central focal point, every quadrant equal. This 1200-reed translation preserves the format and renders it in a unified gray palette so the underlying compositional logic reads clearly.
How It Feels
Patchwork rewards close looking. From across the room it reads as texture; from arm's length it reads as a museum case of small pattern studies. The mixed grays absorb light unevenly — some squares stay matte, others catch highlights — and the rug visually breaks up large open floor areas in a way that solid-field rugs cannot. A rug to look down at, not just stand on.
Specs
- Pile height: 12mm (½")
- Density: ~1.5 million points per square meter
- Backing: woven jute
- Origin: Turkey (1200-reed mill production)
- Care: regular vacuum without beater bar; the busy pattern is forgiving of wear and stains better than most rugs — visible "fade" reads as part of the patina, not damage
Sizes
Stocked in 3×6, 4×6, 5×7.5, 5×8, 8×10, 8×11, and 10×13. The smaller sizes (3×6, 4×6) work surprisingly well as entry rugs because the patchwork density is engaging at small scale. Custom 11×15 and 12×15 commissions take 8–12 weeks. Note that no two patchwork commissions are pattern-identical — the mill rotates the square assortment between runs.
Designer Styling
Pair with mixed wood tones (do not match anything), gallery walls, antique finds, vintage books, plants, layered textiles. The opposite design brief of the formal Crimson + Gold rug: nothing should match, everything should look acquired over time. A leather club chair next to a mid-century lamp next to a Persian-design rug is the platonic ideal. Avoid pairing with anything aggressively modern — the patchwork reads as collected, not designed.
Best For
Eclectic family rooms. Reading nooks. Studios. Home offices for designers, architects, writers — anyone whose work benefits from a visually rich field. Apartments where the resident has lived for a long time and accumulated things. Anywhere the brief is "this should look like it has been here for years."
Skip if: the room is already visually busy — patterned wallpaper, gallery wall, layered upholstery, lots of objects. The rug will compete rather than calm. Skip if the desired aesthetic is minimal, monochromatic, or strictly modernist. Skip if the dominant color in the room is itself a strong color (deep teal walls, oxblood sofa); patchwork wants neutrals to support it.
Sacramento Showroom
Patchwork is one of the few rug formats where the photo and the reality genuinely match — what you see online is what you see on the floor, because the pattern density already prevents any single color from dominating. But it is still worth standing on. 3423 Watt Avenue, Sacramento — Mon–Sun 10am–7pm. Bring a piece of your existing upholstery if you want to confirm the gray temperature works with what you already own.
Reading the Spec Sheet: Reed Count & Density
Patchwork rugs are unusually demanding of the loom — every square holds a different traditional pattern, and any inconsistency in border weight between panels reads immediately at arm's length. 1200 reeds is the density threshold where the 24-plus pattern squares can each register as a distinct studied composition rather than blurring into one busy field.
شانه (shaneh, "reed count") measures yarn points across the loom's width — 1200 shaneh means 1200 vertical warp threads per meter, the finer end of mill-loom production. تراکم (tarakom, "density") measures how tightly the rows pack along the length. Multiplied together they give total points per square meter; for this 1200-reed Turkish weave that lands in the 1.5–3 million points/m² range depending on the mill's counting convention. Higher reed counts hold finer pattern detail; higher density makes a heavier, more durable rug.
One caveat worth knowing: the same shaneh/tarakom numbers aren't always directly comparable across countries, mills, or fiber types. A 1200-reed Turkish power-loom rug is a different object from a 1200-shaneh hand-knotted Iranian piece, even if the spec line reads the same.

02Materials & Craftsmanship
This piece sits in the easy-care performance family — high-density polypropylene or polyester pile on a cotton foundation, precision machine-woven for sharp pattern definition with hand-finished edges. The construction is purpose-built for family-friendly living: stain-resistant, fade-resistant, low-maintenance, and forgiving of regular vacuuming and spot cleaning.
Patterns are inspired by Persian, Kashan, Tabriz, and Turkmen design vocabularies — reinterpreted in a soft synthetic blend that performs in high-traffic rooms without the maintenance commitment of a hand-knotted wool piece.
03Size Guide
5×7.5 ft (150×230 cm, 3.5 m²) — entry rooms, small bedrooms, and sitting areas.
6.5×10 ft (200×300 cm, 6 m²) — medium living rooms and bedrooms with furniture partially on the rug.
8.2×11.5 ft (250×350 cm, 9 m²) — large living rooms and formal dining rooms (all furniture sitting on the rug).
10×13 ft (300×400 cm, 12 m²) — open floor plans and great rooms.
Styling tip: a rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond the sofa on each side for a balanced look.
