Red Persian rugs have been the default Western choice for a hundred and fifty years for a reason: in a room lit by lamps and warmed by wood furniture, no other palette holds its register so well. This 1200-reed translation keeps that classical centre of gravity without leaning into either rustic or kitsch.

Heritage

The deep red of Persian classical rugs comes from madder root — a dye plant that yields a spectrum from rose to oxblood depending on mordant chemistry and pH. The Qajar period (1789–1925) refined the library-rug format around this dye: large central medallion, deep-toned field, dense floral border, sized to anchor a substantial reading room. This rug sits inside that tradition without claiming to be hand-knotted or antique — it is a faithful mill translation of a format the West has been buying for six generations.

How It Feels

Under cool-white overhead light the burgundy reads slightly cooler, slightly more crimson; under warm incandescent or amber LED it deepens to true oxblood with garnet highlights. The navy medallion grounds the field — without it, the rug would read flat in low light. The ivory and gold motif work catches lamplight and gives the eye something to follow at evening reading distance. A rug that improves after sunset.

Stocked in 3×6, 4×6, 5×7.5, 5×8, 8×10, 8×11, and 10×13. Burgundy is one of our two strongest-running palettes (alongside cream), so larger commissions — 11×15, 12×15, 13×16 — are quicker to run than for niche colors, typically 6–10 weeks rather than the full 14.

Designer Styling

Pair with cordovan leather, antique walnut, brass hardware, dark-wood bookshelves, and warm-toned wall art. The classical pairing — burgundy rug, Chesterfield, brass library lamp, tall walnut shelves — works because every element supports the same temperature register. Avoid stark white walls and minimalist furniture: this rug needs a room with weight to it. A single black accent (iron fireplace tool, dark picture frame) reads better than a black sofa or wall.

Best For

Libraries, studies, traditional living rooms, formal dining rooms, lodge or cabin interiors, masculine offices, any room where the lighting is mostly lamps and the furniture is mostly wood. Rooms with leather seating. Rooms with brass. Rooms that get used at night.

Skip if: the room is north-facing with cool daylight as its dominant light source — burgundy needs warmth to come alive, and a permanently cool room flattens it. Reading the Spec Sheet: Reed Count & Density

Qajar-era library rugs were hand-knotted at 4–5 million knots per square meter — densities required so the medallion's fine border work could hold up across decades of foot traffic in heavy-use reception rooms. The 1200-reed mill translation here lands well below the original specification but well above casual machine weaves: the right tier for a working-luxury library rug at a price that suits a real American home.

شانه (shaneh, "reed count") measures yarn points across the loom's width — 1200 shaneh means 1200 vertical warp threads per meter, the finer end of mill-loom production. تراکم (tarakom, "density") measures how tightly the rows pack along the length. Multiplied together they give total points per square meter; for this 1200-reed Turkish weave that lands in the 1.5–3 million points/m² range depending on the mill's counting convention. Higher reed counts hold finer pattern detail; higher density makes a heavier, more durable rug.

One caveat worth knowing: the same shaneh/tarakom numbers aren't always directly comparable across countries, mills, or fiber types. A 1200-reed Turkish power-loom rug is a different object from a 1200-shaneh hand-knotted Iranian piece, even if the spec line reads the same.
