Red & Terracotta Kazak Turkish Rug

From our Herat collection — a Kazak, the Caucasian tribal drawing, and the only design in the line built around figures: stylised birds facing each other across a red ground in terracotta and cream.

Design

Kazak is the trade name for the bold Caucasian geometry of stepped medallions, hooked diamonds and latch-hook borders — and this is the outlier of our collection, the most collectable piece in it. At the centre of each panel sit pairs of stylised birds facing one another, one of the oldest motifs in the weaving vocabulary, read as protection and good fortune. The palette breaks from the rest of the line too: alongside the madder red there is real terracotta and a soft cream, which gives the rug daylight and depth that a red-on-red piece cannot.

Washing and Care

The polypropylene pile is colourfast and water-safe, so this rug can be washed at home — by hand with a hose, mild soap and a soft brush, or with a carpet-cleaning machine. Rinse it clean, squeegee the water out with the direction of the pile, and dry it flat or over a rail; it will not shrink and the colours will not run. Do not put it in a washing machine or a tumble dryer — no area rug of this size belongs in one. Day to day, vacuum on low with the beater bar switched off, and blot spills rather than rubbing them.

Weight and Feel

At 2.6 kg per square metre over a 10 mm medium pile this is a medium-weight rug — dense enough to lie flat straight out of the roll and hold its shape under furniture, light enough that one person can roll and move even the large sizes. On a smooth floor, adhesive rug grippers or corner holders will keep it from sliding.

Styling It

The terracotta and cream make this the easiest rug in the line to live with in a warm, collected room — it sits happily with rattan, aged leather, unglazed ceramics, oak and linen. It is also the one to choose if you want the rug itself to be the conversation: put it somewhere the drawing can be seen, not under a large sofa.

A rug should run 18–24 inches past the sofa on each side. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one — an undersized rug is the most common mistake we see.
