01Description

A window onto the Holy Mosque

Some rugs are made for the floor. This one is made for the most honoured wall in the house — the wall that faces you when you come home, the wall above the place where the family prays, the wall a guest sees first and remembers.

At its heart is the Kaaba, the House of Allah in Makkah, the qibla toward which every Muslim turns five times a day. Around it, the words of the Quran run as a woven border, so the picture is held inside the Word — exactly as it was in the finest Ottoman pieces this tableau descends from.

The gift for the people who raised you

Think of the first thing you ever learned about Makkah. For most of us, it came from a mother's voice or a father's hand guiding ours toward the qibla. Many of our parents have spent a lifetime longing for the Kaaba — some have stood before it, and some are still waiting for the day they can.

This is a gift that answers that longing. Hung in their home, it greets them every morning and every time they rise for prayer. It is not a gift that is used up, worn out or put away in a drawer. It stays on the wall for decades, and one day it passes to their children and grandchildren, carrying the memory of who gave it and why.

In Islam, honouring one's parents is placed beside worship itself. There are few gifts that join the two so completely.

  • For your mother and father — the gift that says what words rarely manage to.
  • For a return from Hajj or Umrah — the House they stood before, brought home to their wall.
  • For Ramadan and Eid — a gift with meaning, not just a price.
  • For a new Muslim home — the first piece to hang, so the house begins with remembrance of Allah.
  • For a nikah — a blessing for the home a new couple is building together.

A tradition nearly four centuries old

Long before photography, the only way most Muslims could see the Holy Mosque was through a picture made by an artist. In seventeenth-century Ottoman Türkiye, the great workshops of İznik painted the Masjid al-Haram onto glazed tiles: the Kaaba at the centre, the colonnades around it, the minarets at the edges, all drawn from above in the flat, precise style of the miniature painters. Many of those tiles carry the verses of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān (3:96–97) — the first House established for mankind, and the call to pilgrimage.

They were hung near the qibla wall of mosques and in homes, as a reminder for those who longed to make Hajj and a keepsake for those who had returned. Examples survive today in the Aga Khan Museum, the Walters Art Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. This tableau carries the same idea forward — the miniature drawing, the calligraphic frame, the Kaaba at the centre — in woven form, for the walls of a modern home.

The feel of it

The pile is viscose, spun fine and cut short so it lies flat like a painted surface, with the cool, liquid hand people reach out to touch. What the camera never quite catches is the way it moves with the light. Stand to one side and the black ground reads as deep ink; step across the room and it lifts to a soft, silken sheen, and the drawing comes forward. In lamplight after Maghrib it glows. In the morning it settles and becomes quiet. It is one piece that reads as two.

Why this one

  • The Ottoman miniature tradition. A finely drawn, bird's-eye composition in the spirit of the İznik Mecca tiles — detailed enough to reward standing close, strong enough to hold a room from across it.
  • Framed in the words of the Quran. Calligraphy woven into the design itself, not printed on.
  • Woven, not printed. Many Kaaba wall hangings are a picture printed onto fabric. This one is woven on a loom, thread by thread, with real depth and pile.
  • A silk-touch sheen. Viscose pile for a lustre that shifts with the light.
  • Hand-tied fringe. Each fringe is knotted by hand, one of the last steps before the piece leaves the workshop.
  • Sized for a wall. 3.3 × 4.9 ft (100 × 150 cm) — large enough to anchor a living room, a majlis or a prayer corner; at home above a sofa, console or bed.

How it is made

It is woven in Türkiye on a fine loom under digital colour control, which is how a drawing this detailed — and calligraphy this exact — holds its lines across the whole field. Off the loom it is washed, sheared to a level pile and finished by hand: the fringe tied knot by knot, the piece inspected front and back. The last step before it is rolled is a person standing in front of it, looking.

So you know exactly what you are buying: this is a new, machine-woven tableau with a viscose pile and hand-tied fringe. It is made in the antique Ottoman style, but it is not an antique and it is not hand-knotted. We say so plainly, because the difference matters.

Hanging it with honour

Because it carries the words of the Quran, many families hang it high — at or above eye level — in a clean, dignified room, and never on the floor or in a bathroom or kitchen.

  • Hang it, don't walk on it. Use a hanging sleeve sewn to the back, a curtain rod with rug clips, or have it framed.
  • Keep it out of direct sun. Strong, constant sunlight will soften the black over time.
  • Dust gently. A soft brush, or a vacuum on low suction with a brush head, in the direction of the pile.
  • Keep water away. Viscose does not forgive water — it can mark, yellow or flatten the sheen permanently. Never soak, steam or wet-clean at home.
  • Use a professional for anything more, and tell them the fibre is viscose before they start.
  • Store it rolled, never folded, pile side out, wrapped in breathable cotton.

We sell rugs; we do not wash, repair or re-fringe them, and we do not send them out on your behalf.

Origin & Heritage

Every rug at Stylish Rugs sits in a wider tradition — Persian, Turkish, Afghan, oriental, or contemporary — and is selected for the way it carries that tradition into a modern home. The catalogue is curated rather than exhaustive: each piece earns its place by build quality, palette, and the role it can play in a designed interior.

How It Feels Underfoot

Construction is what separates a rug that holds its place in a room from one that needs replacing in a few years. Density, pile resilience, edge finishing, and colourfastness all matter — and the catalogue is selected with those factors in mind. Each product page lists exact specifications so the rug can be matched to room, traffic, and intended use.

Designer Styling Notes

Choose by palette first, then by pattern density. Warmer grounds pair with walnut, leather, and brass; cooler grounds with oak, linen, and brushed nickel. Allow the rug to extend at least 18 to 24 inches beyond the sofa on each side in living rooms; in dining rooms, allow 24 inches beyond every chair so chairs pull out without leaving the rug.

Our Curated Selection

Stylish Rugs is a Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue — open daily, ten to seven-thirty — and the catalogue here is a curated slice of what we carry. We serve customers across Northern California in person and online. If you are looking for a specific size or palette you do not see listed, call the showroom or message us on WhatsApp.

02Materials & Craftsmanship

Each piece is precision machine-woven at premium reed counts, ensuring sharp pattern definition and consistent quality across the field. Hand-finished edges add the elevated touch that distinguishes our catalogue.

Patterns draw on Persian, Turkish, and Afghan weaving traditions — see Specifications for exact material and construction details on this piece.

6.5×10 ft6 m²200×300 cmMedium living rooms — front legs on the rug

A rug should run 18–24 inches past the sofa on each side. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one — an undersized rug is the most common mistake we see.

04Care Instructions
  • Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off to protect the pile
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth (don't rub)
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 6 months for even wear
  • Professional clean every 18–24 months
  • No rug pad needed — the cotton backing and the rug's weight keep it flat; a small rug that shifts can use adhesive grippers or corner holders

08Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping take?

Most orders arrive within 3–5 business days. Full rates and the Canada note are in Shipping & Returns above.

What is your return policy?

30-day returns on online orders. The item must be unused, in original condition, and in original packaging. Customer pays return shipping. Approved refunds are processed within 3–7 business days.

Can I see this in person before buying?

Yes — it is on the showroom floor. Opening times and directions are in the Visit Our Sacramento Showroom panel above. Call ahead if you want a specific piece pulled out before you arrive.

How can I get help choosing the right piece?

Message us on WhatsApp or call — the number is in the header and the footer. Tell us the two room measurements and we will tell you honestly which size fits, including when none of ours do.

How do I choose the right rug size?

For living rooms, an 8×10 or 9×12 frames the seating area. The rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond the sofa on each side. For dining rooms, choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table.

How is this rug made?

Every rug we sell is machine-woven in Türkiye, and this page lists its exact construction in Specifications. Synthetic and cotton pieces are honest about their material — see the Materials & Craftsmanship panel for this rug.

Do you offer custom rug sizes?

We don’t weave rugs to order, and custom or metric sizes aren’t available yet — they are coming soon. 10×13 ft is the largest size we carry and we sell from stock. For rugs bought from us we offer two finishing services: overlocking (edge finishing), and cutting a rug down to a smaller size and re-binding its edges. We don’t join rugs together, so for a room bigger than 10×13, two rugs side by side usually works better than one oversized piece.

How should I care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off, blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth, and rotate 180° every 6 months. If it ever needs a full wash, use an independent professional rug cleaner — we don’t clean rugs ourselves. Our free Rug Care Guide below covers the rest.
