Handmade & Hand-Knotted Afghan Rugs in Sacramento

Genuine hand-knotted Afghan carpets — Turkmen gül, Khal Mohammadi, Baluch, Aqcha — tied knot by knot on the loom. We show them by appointment at our Sacramento showroom. Our online catalog is a separate thing: machine-woven Persian-design rugs from Türkiye, hand-finished and honestly labelled.

Two very different things

“Handmade” gets used loosely in this trade. Here is exactly what we sell, where each comes from, and how it’s made.

Hand-knotted Afghan — by appointment

Genuine hand-knotted carpets from Afghanistan: Turkmen gül, Khal Mohammadi, Baluch and Aqcha weaves, tied knot by knot in hand-spun wool. These are shown in person at the Sacramento showroom, not listed online.

Machine-woven, hand-finished — online

Our online catalog: power-loomed in Türkiye in classic Persian, Turkish and Afghan designs, at 1,200 reed, 1.5M and 2M point densities — with the fringes, edges and fine border detail finished by hand.

How to tell them apart

Flip the rug. Hand-knotted shows individual, slightly irregular knots on the back and fringe that is part of the foundation. Machine-woven has a uniform back and an applied fringe. We’ll show you both side by side.

Where each rug comes from

Our hand-knotted pieces are Afghan, woven by Turkmen, Baluch and Hazara weavers in hand-spun wool. Everything in the online catalog is machine-woven in Türkiye and imported directly by container. “Persian,” “Kashan” and “Tabriz” are design and pattern names — the standard vocabulary of the rug trade — not a claim about where a rug was made. Hand-knotted rug questions

Do you sell genuine hand-knotted rugs?

Yes — hand-knotted Afghan carpets, shown at our Sacramento showroom by appointment. They are not listed in the online catalog. Everything you see online is machine-woven in Türkiye with hand-finished fringes and edges.

Where do your hand-knotted rugs come from?

Afghanistan — Turkmen gül, Khal Mohammadi, Baluch and Aqcha traditions, woven in hand-spun wool. Call ahead and we will set aside what is currently on the floor in your size and palette.

Where are the rugs in your online catalog made?

Türkiye (Turkey). We import directly by container to the United States and clear each shipment through U.S. Customs with Türkiye as the declared country of origin. “Persian,” “Kashan” and “Tabriz” describe the design, not the country of manufacture.

What exactly is finished by hand on the machine-woven rugs?

The fringes are attached and finished by hand, the edges are hand-serged or hand-bound, and the fine border and selvedge detailing is completed by hand after weaving. On the 1.5M and 2M point tiers this is most of what you notice up close.

How can I tell a hand-knotted rug from a machine-woven one?

Flip it over. A hand-knotted rug shows individual, slightly irregular knots that mirror the front, with fringe that is part of the foundation. A machine-woven rug has a uniform back and an applied fringe. We are happy to show you both in person.

What is the largest size you carry?

10×13 ft is our largest standard size, and we stock it in most of our Persian-design ranges. For a room that needs more coverage, two rugs placed side by side, or a large rug plus runners, usually works better than one oversized piece — come in and we will map it out with you.
