Afghan Toshak — توشک وطنی
A toshak is the piece of furniture an Afghan house is actually built around. It runs along the wall, it seats guests by day, it sleeps one by night, and in the morning it folds into a stack in the corner. Nothing in a Western furniture catalogue does all four. This collection carries the covers — watani and kabuli patterns, traditional and new designs — and the foam that goes inside them.
Covers, foam, or both
Read each listing carefully, because they are not all the same thing:

Toshak cover sets — $50 to $55. One floor-mattress cover plus two matching cushion covers. Fabric only. This is what most people here are buying, because they already have foam, or they are replacing a cover that has had ten years of use.

Foam set with pillows — from $110. The filling: one foam base and two cushions. Buy this alongside a cover, or on its own to re-fill a set whose covers are still good.

Four foam sets — $400. Enough to line a room, at $100 a set.
If you want the whole thing in one go, take a cover set and a foam set together. We keep them as separate listings on purpose: in Afghan households the cover and the foam have always had different lifespans, and there is no reason to make you buy both when only one has worn out.

Why ours costs what it does
We import the foam ourselves, by the container, direct from the factory, and cut and fill it here in Sacramento. There is no middleman between the foam and your floor. A full four-set of foam is $400 and the covers are $50 each — those are the everyday prices, not a sale we run permanently against an inflated original.
Before you order — two honest things
A toshak needs a wall behind it. The cushions are backrests, not a frame. Set one in the middle of a room and it will slide and lean. Choose the wall first.
Measure the wall, not the room. Each toshak is about 75 inches. A 12-foot wall takes two; most living rooms need three or four to run two walls properly.
Answering your questions about toshak
What exactly is a toshak?
A firm, thin, foldable floor mattress — toshak (توشک) in Dari and Persian — used for seating along the wall by day and sleeping at night. It is the standard seating of Afghan, Persian and Central-Asian homes, and the reason those living rooms feel open in the middle.
Am I buying a cover or a complete toshak?
Check the listing title. Items described as a cover set are fabric only. The foam set is the filling. Many customers here buy the cover alone because they already have the foam — that is normal, not a mistake.
How is a toshak different from a mattress or a futon?
It is firmer, much thinner, and made to fold and be carried daily. A futon is designed to unfold into a bed and stay there; a toshak is designed to be seating that happens to sleep someone. See Toshak vs Mattress, Futon & Memory Foam.
Can I really sleep on it?
Yes — at 75 inches and 4 inches thick it sleeps an adult. Generations have. It is firmer than a Western mattress, which most people either love or take a few nights to get used to.
Can I wash the cover?
Yes. It comes off and machine washes at 30°C, then air dries — do not tumble dry it. The foam core inside is spot-cleaned, not washed.
What is the difference between watani and kabuli?
They are pattern traditions. Watani is the classic countrywide style; kabuli designs are the city variants, often lighter and more ornate. Both are traditional, and households mix them freely.
What is the difference between a toshak and an Arabic majlis set?
A toshak is a long, simple floor mattress with two matching cushions. An Arabic majlis set is four pieces built around a backrest and an armrest. Same idea, different tradition and shape — and many homes use both.
