Buying Floor Seating Online: What to Check Before You Order

The six things product photographs cannot tell you about a floor cushion, and the questions worth asking before you pay. Written by a shop that ships and also has a showroom.

The short answer: Photographs cannot show firmness, and firmness is the thing that decides whether you use floor seating or resent it. Before ordering, get the actual dimensions in centimetres, find out whether foam is included or separate, confirm the cover comes off, and check the return terms. If a listing will not tell you the pad depth and the fill, that is the answer.

The one thing a photograph cannot do

You can photograph colour accurately. You can photograph scale with a person in frame. You cannot photograph firmness, and firmness is what decides whether a floor cushion becomes the place everyone sits or the thing in the corner nobody uses.

This is why most disappointment with floor seating bought online is not about the colour being slightly off. It is that the pad bottoms out after twenty minutes, and the buyer concludes that floor seating is uncomfortable rather than that this particular pad was underfilled.

So the checks below are mostly proxies for firmness, because firmness itself cannot be shown.

1. Dimensions, in centimetres, including depth

"Large floor cushion" is not a specification. Ask for three numbers.

For reference, ours are an Afghan toshak at 85 × 200 cm and an Arabic majlis piece at 70 × 10 × 190 cm. If a listing quotes a length under about 150 cm, it is a decorative cushion rather than a seat — your legs will run out of pad somewhere around mid-thigh.

Depth matters as much as the other two, and it is the number most often missing.

2. Is the foam included?

A surprising number of floor-seating listings are cover-only, and the ones that are do not always say so above the fold. The price is usually the giveaway: a four-piece set at a price that seems too good is a four-piece set of covers.

We separate them deliberately and say so — our majlis sets start at $85 cover-only and run to $419.99 with foam, and the matching foam set is $239.99. That is a reasonable way to sell them. Hiding which one you are buying is not.

3. What is the fill?

If a listing says "filled" without saying with what, assume the cheapest option. Shredded foam offcuts and polyester fibre both photograph exactly like a dense foam core and behave completely differently under an adult.

Fibre fill compresses and does not come back. Shredded foam migrates, so the pad develops lumps and hollows within months. A solid foam core is what you want, and a seller who has one will say so.

4. Does the cover come off?

Look for a zip or an opening along a long edge. This is not a minor convenience — a cover that does not come off means the first serious spill ends the pad, and it means you can never change the colour without replacing everything.

5. How is it shipped, and what does it cost?

Foam ships compressed and springs back; covers ship flat. Neither should be expensive to send, so a large shipping charge on floor seating is worth questioning.

Ours is free over $110 across the USA and Canada, in three to five days. Whatever the seller's terms, find them before you have your card out rather than at checkout.

6. What happens if it is wrong?

Floor seating is exactly the category where returns matter, because of the firmness problem above. Thirty days is our window. A seller with no stated return policy on a product whose key quality cannot be photographed is asking you to take all of the risk.

The showroom shortcut

If you are anywhere near Sacramento, the thirty-minute test settles this faster than any amount of reading. Our covers and foam sets are out on the floor at 3423 Watt Avenue precisely so people can sit on them — not for thirty seconds, which tells you the wrong answer, but long enough for soft foam to reveal itself.

Before ordering, it is worth reading the foam density guide and the sizing guide — between them they cover most of what a listing will not tell you.

Seeing it in Sacramento

Foam firmness is the one thing a photograph cannot tell you. Our showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95821 has the covers and the foam sets out on the floor, open daily 10 AM–7:30 PM, so you can sit on a set before deciding how firm you want it. Call or text (916) 890-4077 if you want a particular colour pulled out before you arrive.

Common questions

What should I check before buying a floor cushion online?

Dimensions in centimetres including depth, whether foam is included or the listing is cover-only, what the fill actually is, whether the cover comes off, shipping cost, and the return window. Firmness cannot be photographed, so those are the proxies.

How big should a floor cushion be to sit on properly?

Long enough to take an adult from tailbone past the knee. Ours are 85 x 200 cm for an Afghan toshak and 70 x 10 x 190 cm per majlis piece. Under about 150 cm long is a decorative cushion, not a seat.

Why is one floor seating set so much cheaper than another?

Most often because the cheaper one is cover-only. The second most common reason is fill - polyester fibre and shredded foam offcuts photograph like a solid foam core and behave nothing like one under an adult.

Can you return floor seating if it is too soft?

With us, within 30 days. It is worth checking any seller's terms before ordering, because firmness is precisely the quality a product photograph cannot show you.

Does floor seating cost a lot to ship?

It should not - foam ships compressed and covers ship flat. Ours is free over $110 across the USA and Canada in three to five days.
