What “pet-friendly” actually means here

The phrase gets used loosely online. We use it to mean three specific things: (1) fibre durability — the rug holds up to claws, dragged toys and repeated traffic without rapid pile-flattening; (2) stain release — the fibre does not permanently bond with liquid spills, so spot-cleaning actually works; (3) low-profile pile — the rug does not trap hair, dander or kibble in a way that makes vacuuming impractical.

Our 1200-reed line meets all three: 66% polypropylene / 34% polyester on a cotton warp, about 10 mm of pile, fast-twist yarn that resists matting, and solution-dyed colour that sits inside the fibre rather than on it.

How our rugs are made

  • Machine-woven (power-loomed) in Türkiye, imported directly by container to the United States.
  • Hand-finished. Fringes are attached and finished by hand, edges are hand-serged or hand-bound, and fine border detailing is completed by hand after weaving.
  • Hand-knotted Afghan carpets are shown by appointment — but for homes with pets we steer people to the machine-woven range instead. Hand-knotted wool takes traffic well and claws badly. See the hand-knotted collection →

Choosing colour and pattern for fur

Pattern hides more than colour does. A solid field of any shade shows everything. An ivory medallion on a charcoal ground hides both dark and light fur, because there is always something for the eye to land on instead.

Match the ground to your animal, roughly. Dark fur disappears into navy and charcoal; light fur disappears into beige and camel. With two animals of different colours, go patterned and mid-tone rather than trying to split the difference.

Skip the pale solid grounds in the traffic lanes. Cream is lovely in a bedroom and a losing battle by the back door.

Sizing for pet households

  • Open-plan with dogs: a 9×12 or 10×13 anchors the conversation grouping and extends past the sofa where dogs actually settle. A rug that is too small concentrates every path across its edges, which is where flattening shows first.
  • Dining room with cats: 8×10 under a six-seater covers the pulled-back chair footprint, and a medallion field carries the odd bit of fur between vacuums.
  • Hallways and kitchens: a runner takes the pet-traffic lane and is far easier to lift and rinse than a room-sized rug.

Care in a pet household

Routine: vacuum with the beater bar off. Spills: blot with cold water and a drop of mild dish soap, working from the outside in — never scrub. Accidents: get to them within about thirty minutes with cold water and a paper-towel press; speed matters far more than any product. Full clean: hose the rug down outdoors and lay it flat to dry, or take it to a carpet-wash service.

Answering your questions about pet-friendly rugs

Are these rugs washable?

Yes — water-safe and colourfast, so water cleans them rather than damages them. Blot everyday spills with cold water and mild soap; for a full clean, hose the rug down outdoors and lay it flat to dry, or take it to a carpet-wash service for a proper rug wash.

Will pet accidents leave a permanent stain or smell?

Not if you get to them quickly. The fibre sheds moisture rather than drinking it, so liquid sits on the surface for a while instead of soaking into the backing — which is the real difference between this and wool. Blot it up, rinse the area with cold water, and let it dry fully.

Are hand-knotted rugs a good idea with pets?

Generally no. Hand-knotted wool is beautiful and long-lived, but claws pull the pile and accidents need professional washing. For an active pet household the machine-woven range here is the practical choice, and we will say so in the showroom.

Are these safe for a puppy that chews?

The fibre is non-toxic, but no rug is chew-proof. Through active teething, use a rug you are not precious about, or protect the edges — the bound edge is where a determined puppy starts.

Do claws snag the pile?

The low, dense, fast-twist pile here has very little loop for a claw to catch, which is why it outlasts a shaggy or loop-pile rug in a cat household. Keeping claws trimmed does the rest.

Does a rug pad help?

Yes, and more than people expect. A felt-and-rubber pad stops the rug sliding when a dog takes a corner at speed, and it adds a cushion layer that slows liquid from reaching the floor beneath. Size it about 4 inches shorter than the rug on every side.

Can I see these in person with my situation in mind?

Yes — most of the in-stock catalog is on the floor at our Sacramento showroom, 3423 Watt Avenue. Tell us what animals you have and we will point you at the grounds and patterns that survive them. WhatsApp (916) 890-4077.

Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Home

A fine rug should feel beautiful, balanced, and practical for the way you live. Use this quick guide to choose the right size, color, material, and style.

Choose the Right Size

For living rooms, 8×10 or 9×12 usually frames the seating area. For dining rooms, choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table.

Match Your Color Story

Burgundy and gold create a warm traditional look. Navy and cream feel elegant and modern. Ivory, beige, and soft tones help brighten smaller rooms.

Understand Rug Quality

Machine-made rugs offer consistent patterns, durability, and easier maintenance. Higher density and detailed weaving create sharper designs.

Shop by size

Not sure what fits? In a living room the rug should reach 18–24 inches past each side of the sofa. In a dining room, allow 24 inches beyond every chair so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.

Practical buying notes

What to know before buying a machine-made rug

Construction

The online catalog is power-loomed in Türkiye with hand-attached fringes and hand-finished edges. Each product page lists the exact construction, density, pile height and material.

Material & feel

A polypropylene pile on a cotton warp and weft — soft underfoot, colourfast, and far more forgiving of traffic and spills than wool.

Cleaning

Colourfast and water-safe, so a rug can be washed at home by hand or with a carpet-cleaning machine. Never in a washing machine or dryer. Day to day, vacuum on low with the beater bar off.

Best rooms

Living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, family rooms and majlis seating — anywhere you want a traditional look that survives daily use.

Hand-knotted

Genuine hand-knotted Afghan carpets are shown at the Sacramento showroom by appointment. They are not part of this online catalog.

Common questions

How much is shipping, and how long does it take?

Shipping is free on orders over $110 across the USA and Canada, and a flat $20 below that. Orders leave within one business day and arrive in 3–5 business days in the U.S. Sacramento-area online orders get free local delivery in 1–2 days.

What is your return policy?

30-day returns on online orders. Items must be unused, in original condition and in original packaging. The customer pays return shipping; if a rug arrives damaged or faulty, we pay. Approved refunds are processed within 3–7 business days.

Are these rugs machine-made or hand-knotted?

The online catalog is power-loomed (machine-woven) in Türkiye, with hand-attached fringes and hand-finished edges. Every product page lists the exact construction, density, pile height and material. Hand-knotted Afghan pieces are shown at the Sacramento showroom by appointment and are not listed online.

Can a rug be cut or bound to a different size?

We sell from stock rather than weaving to order, and the largest size we carry is 10×13. What we do in house is cutting, binding, overlocking and fringe work on a rug we already stock, so an existing piece can be trimmed to fit an alcove or a stair run. Ask us and we will tell you what is on the floor.

Can I see the rugs in person before buying?

Yes. The showroom is at 3423 Watt Avenue, Sacramento, open daily 10:00 AM – 7:30 PM. We speak English, Turkish, Farsi, Dari, Pashto and Urdu, and the team can help with size and colour choices.
