What Size Rug Goes Under a Queen vs King Bed? The Bedroom Cheat-Sheet

Queen vs king bed rug sizes made simple: 8x10 under a queen, 9x12 under a king, plus runner and small-room options. The bedroom cheat-sheet.

Standing in your bedroom holding a tape measure is the moment most rug decisions go sideways. A rug that looked huge in the photo shrinks the second it lands next to a queen or king bed, and a too-small rug makes the whole room read like an afterthought. The good news is that bedrooms follow a simple, repeatable rule, and once you know the two anchor sizes you can stop second-guessing. Here is the cheat-sheet our team at the showroom gives people every single day.

The Two Sizes That Cover 90% of Bedrooms

For most bedrooms, the decision comes down to two rug sizes:

  • 8x10 under a queen bed. A queen mattress is 60 inches wide. An 8x10 (96 inches wide) gives you a generous, even border of soft rug on both sides and at the foot of the bed.
  • 9x12 under a king bed. A king mattress is 76 inches wide, so you need the extra width of a 9x12 (108 inches) to keep that balanced frame around the bed.

The trick that makes either size work: do not center the rug under the whole bed. Slide it so it sits under the lower two-thirds of the bed, starting just below the nightstands. You waste no rug under the headboard area where nobody walks, and you put softness exactly where your feet land in the morning.

How far should it stick out?

Aim for 18 to 24 inches of rug visible beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Eighteen inches is the comfortable minimum so you step onto rug, not cold floor. Twenty-four inches feels luxe and gives a king bed room to breathe. Less than 18 inches and the rug starts to look like a bath mat that wandered in.

Nightstands On or Off the Rug?

Both work, and it mostly depends on room size:

  • Nightstands off the rug (rug starts below them) is the most common and most forgiving look. It lets you use a slightly smaller, more affordable rug and keeps the furniture grounded on the floor.
  • Nightstands on the rug requires going up a size, often a 10x13 or larger, so the rug reads as a single deliberate zone. It looks fantastic in big primary suites but can overwhelm a standard bedroom.

If you are unsure, default to nightstands off the rug. It is the safer call in nine out of ten rooms.

The Runners-on-Each-Side Alternative

Sometimes a single large rug just is not practical, maybe your bed is pushed into a corner, or you do not want to commit to a 9x12. In that case, place a runner along each long side of the bed, roughly 2.5 to 3 feet wide and 6 to 8 feet long. You get the warm-feet-in-the-morning payoff without buying a room-sized rug, and it is a smart move for guest rooms and rentals. Some people add a third runner or small rug at the foot of the bed to complete the look.

Small Bedrooms and Tight Layouts

If a full 8x10 swallows your room, you have honest options:

  • Pull the rug to the foot of the bed. A 5x7 or 6x9 placed across the lower third of the bed adds softness and color without fighting the walls.
  • Use a runner at the foot if floor space is genuinely tight.
  • Choose a low-pile or flatweave design so the rug does not visually crowd a small space.
