1. Getting the size right
Size is the decision people regret most — almost always by going too small. A rug should define a zone, not sit like a stamp in the middle of the floor. The simple rule: in a living room, the front legs of every seating piece should rest on the rug, with 12–18 inches of floor showing around the edges.
| Room | Typical size | Shop |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom accent / apartment living | 5×7 | 5×7 rugs |
| Compact living / dining nook | 6×9 | 6×9 rugs |
| Standard living room | 8×10 | 8×10 rugs |
| Large living / dining / great room | 9×12 – 10×13 | 9×12 & 10×13 |
| Estate / open great room | 12×15+ | Large & oversized |
For a dining room, add 24 inches of rug beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, let the rug run 18–24 inches past the bed on three sides. Still unsure? Send us your room dimensions — we will tell you exactly what fits, with no obligation.
2. Materials & construction
Two rugs can look identical online and behave completely differently in your home. What matters is how they are made and what they are made of.
Construction, honestly
Most of our online catalog is high-density machine-woven Persian-design rugs — 1200-reed, 1.5-million-point, and 2-million-point weaves that capture classic Persian motifs at an accessible price and wear beautifully in daily-use rooms. Genuine hand-knotted Persian, Tabriz, Kashan, and silk pieces are a different category — collector items we keep in the Sacramento showroom and source on commission. Both are honest choices; they simply serve different goals.
Fibers
Wool is the workhorse — resilient, naturally stain-resistant, and forgiving. Silk and silk-touch fibers add sheen and fine detail but ask for gentler rooms. Our accessible Persian-design line uses a durable microfiber-and-jute composition built for real life. For a deeper breakdown, see our rug materials guide and hand-knotted vs machine-made comparison.
3. Choosing a style
Style is where personality enters. The four families below cover most Sacramento homes — and they mix more easily than people expect.
Traditional Persian medallions ground a formal living or dining room; modern and neutral weaves suit open, light-filled California interiors. If you are torn, our traditional and luxury Sacramento pages walk through specific looks.
4. Pet- & kid-friendly rugs
A busy household does not rule out a beautiful rug — it just narrows the field. Look for low-to-medium pile, forgiving multi-color patterns that hide the occasional spill, and constructions that clean up easily. Our machine-woven Persian-design rugs are a genuinely practical choice here: dense, low-shed, and far more affordable to live with than a hand-knotted piece.
Whatever you choose, a good rug pad extends its life and keeps it from sliding underfoot.
5. Luxury & hand-knotted
At the top of the craft are hand-knotted carpets — Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain, and Qum silk — woven knot by knot over months or years. These are heirloom and investment pieces, and they deserve to be seen in person. We keep a rotating selection in the showroom and source specific sizes, palettes, and origins on commission.
If you love the look but want everyday practicality, our luxury 1.5M–2M-point line delivers remarkable detail in a durable, machine-woven form. We are always happy to show both side by side so you can feel the difference and decide honestly.
6. Care & maintenance
A well-kept rug outlives the room it was bought for. The basics: vacuum weekly without a beater bar, rotate 180 degrees twice a year to even out sun and foot traffic, and blot spills within 30 seconds using a clean cotton towel — never rub. Keep fine pieces out of harsh direct sunlight to preserve dye saturation.
For deep cleaning, repair, fringe work, or restoration, use a specialist rather than a generic carpet cleaner. We offer all of these in-house — see our Sacramento rug services. For more, our care & cleaning guide goes step by step.
7. Designing for California homes
Northern California interiors lean bright, open, and indoor-outdoor — lots of natural light, hardwood and tile floors, and open-plan great rooms. A few local notes: in sun-flooded rooms, favor wool and dye-fast weaves to resist fading; in open plans, define each zone with its own rug rather than one giant rug floating between sofa and dining table; and against warm hardwood, cream, gold, and soft-blue palettes read especially well.
We deliver and place rugs across the region — from Sacramento proper out to Placer County and the foothills. Browse your city for local sizing notes and showroom directions:

Frequently asked questions
What size rug do I need for my living room?
For a standard living room, an 8×10 anchors a sofa-and-chairs grouping with the front legs on the rug. Large and open great rooms usually need a 9×12 or 10×13. Measure your seating zone and add 12–18 inches of floor reveal on each side, or send us the dimensions and we will confirm.
Are your rugs handmade or machine-made?
Both. Our online catalog is mostly high-density machine-woven Persian-design (1200-reed, 1.5M and 2M point). Genuine hand-knotted Persian, Tabriz, Kashan, and silk pieces live in our Sacramento showroom and are available on commission. Every product page states the construction plainly.
Which rugs are best for homes with pets and kids?
Low-to-medium pile, multi-color patterns that hide spills, and durable machine-woven constructions. Add a rug pad for grip and longevity. See our honest guide to washable rugs for true wash-and-go options.
