01Description

An Afghan toshak cover set in deep burgundy with a fine blue scroll pattern running all over the surface, finished with red fringe at the ends. One floor-mattress cover plus two matching burgundy cushion covers. There is no medallion and no border here — the colour does the work, and the quiet all-over pattern keeps it from looking plain.

Designed and produced by our own team — Afghan and Turkish craftspeople who grew up with these pieces in their own homes. We import the foam ourselves by the container and cut and fill it here in Sacramento.

What you are buying

1 Set Just Cover — $49.99. Fabric only: one mattress cover plus two cushion covers.
2 Sets Cover + Foam — $299.99. Two complete sets: 2 toshak and 4 pillows, covers and foam together.

Care: the cover comes off and machine washes at 30°C, then air dries. The foam core is spot-cleaned.

Best for

Rooms that already have a busy patterned rug: a solid-looking burgundy set sits calmly on top of it. It also pairs naturally with red Afghan and Turkmen rugs.

Before you order

A toshak needs a wall behind it — the cushions are backrests, not a frame. And measure the wall, not the room: each toshak is about 75 inches, so a 12-foot wall takes two.

Origin & Heritage

The Afghan toshak is the floor mattress of the home — long, firm, often laid in pairs along the walls of a sitting room and topped with bolster pillows. It is the foundation of the traditional Afghan reception room (mehmankhana), and it remains in everyday use across the diaspora — including the substantial Afghan community in the Sacramento area.

How It Feels Underfoot

Toshaks are built for daily use and long evenings of seated conversation. The cushion is firm enough to support a seated weight without compressing, the cover is structured for repeated wear, and the bolsters carry the lean. Properly built, a toshak holds its shape for years — and the cover can be cleaned or replaced separately when needed.

Designer Styling Notes

Lay toshaks along walls in pairs or threes, with bolster pillows at intervals and a low table at the centre of the configuration. Pair with warmer wood accents — walnut, oak — and brass or copper tea service. For a more designed read, set against a single substantial Persian or Afghan rug; for a more traditional one, layer multiple smaller rugs in complementary palettes.

Our Curated Selection

Stylish Rugs is a Sacramento showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue — open daily, ten to seven-thirty — and the catalogue here is a curated slice of what we carry. We serve the Persian-speaking, Afghan, Arab and wider Muslim communities of Sacramento and Northern California in person and online. If you are looking for a specific size or palette you do not see listed, call the showroom or message us on WhatsApp and we will let you know what is on the floor right now.

02Materials & Craftsmanship

Our Afghan toshak sets are crafted in the traditional way: handwoven kilim-style covers with high-density foam inserts and hand-finished edges. Patterns reflect classic Turkmen and northern Afghan motifs.

Cover fabrics are durable enough for daily floor seating yet soft enough for prayer rooms and meditation spaces. Removable covers (where marked) allow easy washing and rotation.

03What's Included

Each Afghan toshak set typically includes the floor mattress base and matching back pillows. Exact piece counts vary by variant — see the size selector above for details.

04Care Instructions

Removable fabric cover — spot clean with mild detergent and a damp cloth
Cover may be machine washed on a gentle cold cycle if removable
Air dry only — do not tumble dry
Vacuum cushions occasionally with a brush attachment
