Floor Seating for Hosting: How Many Guests Actually Fit

The arithmetic of seating a room at floor level - how many adults a toshak really takes, how to lay out a room for twelve, and where to leave the gaps for serving.

The short answer: Count seats, not cushions. One toshak at 85 × 200 cm comfortably seats one adult with room to stretch, or two sitting closer than strangers would choose. A four-piece majlis set around three walls of an average room takes five to seven adults — and more than doubles that if people are willing to sit shoulder to shoulder, which at a family gathering they usually are.

The arithmetic nobody does before buying

The question people ask in the showroom is "how many does this seat?" and the honest answer has two numbers — the comfortable one and the gathering one.

An Afghan toshak is 85 × 200 cm. At 200 cm long, one adult sits on it with room to put a leg out, turn sideways and leave a cup beside them. Two adults fit if they know each other. Three is a family photograph, not an evening.

An Arabic majlis piece is 70 × 10 × 190 cm, and a four-piece set covers roughly three sides of an ordinary living room. Comfortably that is five to seven adults. At an Eid gathering, with people genuinely happy to sit close, the same set takes ten or more.

Compare that with the thing it replaces: a three-seat sofa seats three. It seats three at a quiet Tuesday dinner and it seats three when fourteen people arrive, at which point someone is carrying in dining chairs.

Laying out a room for a crowd

The instinct is to line the pads along the longest wall. Do not. A room laid out that way seats fewer people and everyone ends up looking at the same wall.

The arrangement that works — and it is the traditional majlis layout, for reasons that are practical rather than ceremonial — is seating around the perimeter with the middle left empty:

  • Start at the corners. A corner seat has two surfaces to lean on, so it holds a person comfortably in less linear space than a flat wall does.
  • Run the long sides next. Pads go edge to edge, not with gaps — a gap is where someone's hip lands.
  • Leave one side open. That is the serving side, and it is where people enter and stand. A room seated on all four sides has no circulation and feels tense.
  • Keep the middle clear except for a low table. The empty centre is what makes a floor-seated room feel larger than a sofa-furnished one of the same size.

Why the sightline matters when the room is full

A sofa back stands 75–90 cm off the floor. Floor seating with back pillows tops out around 25 cm. With fourteen people in a room, that difference is the difference between a crowded room and a full one.

At floor level everybody is at the same height, so everyone can see everyone, and the upper half of the room stays visually empty. Conversation works differently too: a circle seats a conversation, a row seats an audience.

The gap for food

This is the detail that separates a room laid out by someone who has hosted this way from one laid out from a photograph.

Food at floor level arrives on a tray or a cloth in the middle, and somebody has to be able to get to it and back without stepping over three people. That is what the open side is for. If the room has a door on one of the walls you want to seat, the door side becomes the serving side automatically — which usually settles the layout for you.

A low table in the centre helps, but keep it genuinely low and genuinely movable. At floor height a coffee table of normal height is a wall.

The floor underneath, when a room is full

With four people a thin rug is survivable. With fourteen it is not, because every one of them is in contact with the floor for three hours.

Size the rug so the whole seating ring sits on it — a pad half on and half off makes a ridge directly under somebody. In most living rooms that means the rug is doing the job a sofa-anchored rug never has to do, and it is the reason a floor-seated room benefits from a larger rug than the same room with conventional furniture.

Storing it between gatherings

If you host monthly rather than nightly, the storage question matters as much as the seating one. Covers fold into a cupboard. Foam pads at roughly 10 cm thick slide under a bed or stand against the back of a wardrobe. Spare dining chairs, by comparison, take up exactly as much room whether or not anyone is sitting on them.

Seeing it in Sacramento

Foam firmness is the one thing a photograph cannot tell you. Our showroom at 3423 Watt Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95821 has the covers and the foam sets out on the floor, open daily 10 AM–7:30 PM, so you can sit on a set before deciding how firm you want it. Call or text (916) 890-4077 if you want a particular colour pulled out before you arrive.

Common questions

How many people does a toshak seat?

One adult comfortably, with room to stretch and put a cup down, or two sitting closer than strangers would choose. An Afghan toshak is 85 x 200 cm.

How many guests does a four-piece majlis set seat?

Five to seven adults comfortably around three sides of an average living room, and considerably more at a family gathering where people are happy to sit close.

How do you lay out a room for floor seating?

Seating around the perimeter, middle left open, one side kept clear for serving and circulation. Start at the corners - a corner seat holds a person in less linear space because there are two surfaces to lean on.

Does floor seating make a room feel bigger when it is full?

Yes, because of sightline. A sofa back is 75-90 cm; floor seating with back pillows tops out around 25 cm, so the upper half of the room stays open and everyone is at the same height.

Where do you store floor seating between gatherings?

Flat. Covers fold into a cupboard and foam pads around 10 cm thick slide under a bed or stand behind a wardrobe - unlike spare chairs, which occupy the same space whether used or not.
